Get to know your non-human neighbors
No matter your environment rural, urban, or suburban, ecosystems function around you. Sometimes this can be hard to see especially in cities. Growing up in a city myself I wasn’t aware of the great diversity of wildlife that was just out of sight and I’ve always been a huge biology nerd! We live in a world that is increasingly isolated and getting to know our neighbors is important. That includes our non-human ones!
Getting to know someone new can be challenging…
~they can be structured~
~they can be a bit shy~
~they can look down on you~
~they can look at you a little funny~
~sometimes they can be a bit hard to find~
So let me introduce you!
Hi! My name is Destiny
I'm a writer, biologist, and artist passionate about ecology and our relationships to the natural world. I want you to get to know your non-human neighbors better from plants, to animals, to fungi, and the odd protist. I’m based out of California, so these are the groups I focus on most of the time.
There’s many ways to get to know your non-human neighbors:
I illustrate nearly every creature I talk about and then some! I use a variety of mediums including, watercolor, gouache, graphite, and digital. Digital is my primary medium though. I do it express the way I feel about them better, but it also provides another opportunity. If you check out the Eco Studio you can have something for yourself too!
I run a newsletter where I write about California Natives, Ecology, and the things I’ve got going on behind the scenes. You can check out my past work on SubStack and soon it will be here on the site so you can stay up to date on what I’m posting now, and what I’ve posted about in the past!
It’s one thing to talk about and even illustrate the creatures I talk about, but the best part is you can find them on your own! If you need a little help I lead hikes to catch, identify and photograph insects. We of course are always on the lookout for other forms of life along the way. Follow the newsletter for updates and check out the best photos above.
